Grid forming is not optional in weak grids

As renewables displace synchronous generation, system operators in the UK, Australia and parts of Africa are treating grid forming as a hard requirement, not a nice-to-have.

Grid following inverters need a stable voltage waveform to lock onto. In grids where synchronous machines are being retired faster than they are replaced, that waveform is no longer guaranteed at every node.

Grid forming inverters generate the reference themselves. They synthesise virtual inertia, damp oscillations in milliseconds and continue operating through faults where a grid following unit would trip.

System operators are now writing these behaviours into connection codes. In practice, a project that cannot demonstrate grid forming capability is closed out of an increasing number of markets, particularly for long-duration and system-support use cases.

The Blue Sphere platform is grid forming at the block level, not through a bolt-on. That matters because the capability has to be present in the power conversion and controls, not layered on afterwards.
